I remember growing up in the 80’s and 90’s when I watched a new movie, especially a musical or animated feature, the final song was one that usually made it to my top ten picks for a while. Back then all the movies had great music and they usually saved the best for last but as I listened to the final score, the credits flowing slowly across the screen, there was usual a feeling of accomplishment and contentment of reaching a satisfactory ending in the storyline. Life, unfortunately, isn’t always like that. Many times I may walk away from a situation feeling unfinished, unsatisfied, and frustrated with the outcome. I’m wondering why it had to end like that or simply leave off in the final moments feeling incomplete, like running a race but there is no winner because we all slowed down midway and veered off on different paths.

Sometimes justice can feel the same way. There is no superman to always Catch the bad guys or shed light on the corruption happening behind closed doors and under our very noses. Worse yet, who is going to make up for all the terrible things that are happening in this world and when? Chapter 18 addresses these very questions.

“Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.”

The finality of this verse is a reassurance to the believers because they have been pleading with the Lord for justice to be done against this corrupt system of Babylon. “…the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.” This final score is the answer to the many prayers of the saints. The flow of a song carries on the wind as the names of those offenders of God and His people are washed away by the sea and forgotten, overshadowed by the Lord’s victory.

“The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore.”

The memory of this city and what the world would view as its greatness will be wiped out in the perfect will of God. The detail of finality in clarifying that the music will be no longer heard and the arts and crafts will be forever lost is a point made and meant to be understood as the end of all the works of this place where evil thrives. Nothing will be spared.

“The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.””

The believers that were sacrificed in this city will be avenged by God’s destruction of it and the voices that cried out for justice will finally have peace in its silence Just as that feeling of the perfect ending of your favorite movie but this will be so much more. Little sparrows, The final judgement is coming to the earth and we need to be prepared for it. Make your time in fellowship with the Lord your priority because we cannot have time back once it has been spent. There are no returns or credits given for time wasted.

I pray your days and weeks are filled with the peace that passes understanding and knowing the He is in control.
