“After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.””

Revelation 18:1-3 NKJV

We read in the last chapter of the fall of the religious system of Babylon, now we see the political and economic system falling as well. An angel comes to deliver the news of the destruction of this corrupt system and reveal the truth behind the deceptive lifestyle the world has come to embrace. The beginning of this chapter, we see Babylon describe as a “dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit and a cage for every unclean and hated bird.“ While you may be imagining a sci-fi movie scene, remember that the spirit world isn’t always as it seems. Even demons can present themselves as angels of light. Oh how easy it is to be deceived.

At the end of verse three, it states that “the merchants of the Earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” While sometimes money and luxury can be confused for sin and evil, remember it is the love of worldly things such as money and luxury that lay the foundations for evil things. As someone who works in the field of real estate, I hear and see every day how excessive money can change people. While having luxurious items in your life, or some extra money in the bank is not a bad thing, it’s how we look at those things that matters.

“And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.”

Revelation 18:4-5 NKJV

Every day I listen to trainings, my social media is flooded with motivational speeches, the people I learned my business from ever in front of me, telling me the importance of “mindset.” I’ve grown to dislike this term while still understanding that it has value. There’s a reason the Bible tells us to focus on certain things. Things like, love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, self-control… These are the things we should be focused on. When you’re focus turns to money, luxury, fulfillment, self-worth, Self…blah, blah, blah, this is where sin begins to seed and sprout in your thoughts.

It’s a fine line and a daily struggle to keep our thoughts and actions in check. While every human on earth desires to have things a little easier, their bank account a little fuller, and their lives a little less worrisome, we have to remember that without struggles we can’t grow. Should you be one of those, blessed enough to have much, I pray that you would focus on what the Lord has for you. Keep your eyes on His will, and not let the gold and jewels of this world distract you.

The Lord is calling his children away from the system, away from believing in a fallen kingdom and following a broken economy. Patriotism and loyalty can be good things, but we as believers must always remember that our God and our relationship with him must come first. We hope that our leaders will look to him as well, we obey their rules and pay our taxes, regardless of who sits on that throne, but our loalty lies with Christ alone.

“Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.”

Revelation 18:6-8 NKJV

The Lord will harshly judge this system and its leaders, and those who follow it. It says they will be repaid double. Be careful, little sparrows, not to fall for the lies. Set your mind on things of the Lord, and don’t let the whispers of this false kingdom distract you. Because, while we have not yet reached this moment in Revelation, this system and its creators, are already here in the present and taking hold. Remember that it is not riches and luxury that are bad but the act of making those things our gods that makes them a problem in our lives.
